Dave Smith was on a high. The first valentines day for as long as he could remember when the day actually meant something. Yvonne his girlfriend had been with him for almost a year and he called at the florist the afternoon before and bought 2 bunches of flowers.
Before leaving work he left one bunch in a vase on his secretarys desk. The card read nothing, just a question mark as a sign of anonimity. It could have been from any of the guys at work and hey, Sue might not get valentines pressy anyhow.
Dave ran outside before he left for work on the 14th and arranged the flowers while the kettle boiled. Left a card alongside them and took a cuppa upstairs to Yvonne. " Happy valentines day my darlin! Giving her a quick kiss. See you later". Running late Dave jumped in his new "repmobile", placed his mobile on its hands free cradle and sped off to the office.
Soon joining the usual train of commuters heading the same direction. Radio local beating out the usual mixture of 80s rubbish and traffic alerts. Same shit different day he pondered although today felt special. He looked forward to tonight and a nice meal at the chinese. Yvonne had sorted her kids out with a babysitter and for once they had the night to themselves.
After couple of years with divorces and family arguments it was all coming together at long last. He wondered if Sue had found her boquet yet and smiled at the thought of the look on her face. She always got to work first and made the coffee before planning the days agenda. He was looking forwards to teasing her about the flowers and her trying to guess who they where from.
Entering the 30mph limit and nearly there, Dave thought what a beautiful day it was for mid February although the sun was blindingly low. The traffic was as busy as normal, then as Daves phone bleeped. It was a text message coming through and instinctivly Dave pushed the button, but the message caught his eye. He read it twice.
His next recollection wasnt "thanks for the flowers darling", or the stationary Fiat Punto that he was just about to hit at 30mph. Nor was it the fire that engulfed both cars. He didnt know Emma Jones and her 9 month old daughter Ruby. Emma survived the impact but poor Rubys baby seat wasnt fitted properly and she died instantly as the seat swung through 90 degrees and her head shattered the side window.
What Dave remembered was a deafening whiteness. The airbag deployed and saved him from serious injury. He was blinded in both eyes by his broken sunglasses. Many peoples lives were changed that day. Onlookers and helpers couldnt sleep. Emma never recovered from her injuries and was buried beside her baby daughter.
Dave became another statistic on the polices endless accident investigation records.
Two women had stood by their flowers that morning. Both sent a text message to Dave from their mobile phones.
Think before you call or text someone who could be driving. And turn off your phone if your driving. Please.
